Why Microsoft software is the worst

This post is meant as notes to self to document the innumerable issues I have run into when using Microsoft software:

  1. Ran into blue screen of death on 12/26/2022. chkdsk, sfc did not find any issues. Neither did Windows Memory Diagnostics. Thought that problem was with hardware but resetting the PC fixed the problem. Turns out it was most likely due to a bluetooth issue released in KB5021234 (windows update).
  2. On Mac installed .NET SDK and viola when I type dotnet on the terminal, it’s not recognized. SO provided the solution.
  3. Windows Terminal crashes if you try to run it as administrator. cannot find some VCRuntime.dll
  4. Was developing a program on Mac that uses GDI+. First, Microsoft has decided to end support for GDI+ on non-Windows platforms with .NET 7.0. Why? What about the people that are using it? But they say you can use it with .NET 6.0 provided you set a flag in [appname].runtimeconfig.json. So I did exactly that and it did not work. Others have run into same issue. Fixed it eventually. As best as I can tell, you cannot manually edit [appname].runtime.json. You have to go through another process. Which tells me that [appname].runtime.json doesn’t really matter. The build process probably injects the config in .dll file or something.
  5. Other day I wanted to simply import a CSV into Excel. Headed over to Microsoft docs on how to do that. Found a page but instructions were out of sync and could not see the buttons in the instructions on the UI of Excel.
  6. Another example of classic Microsoft

The only good thing about Microsoft software is that you can at least complain. With Apple, you can’t do even that.
